This live, virtual Intro to Sketch Writing class focuses on the structure behind the funny. Instead of staring at a blank page hoping inspiration hits, you’ll learn practical frameworks used in professional sketch comedy—like reality vs. non-reality, character-driven pieces, parody, and two-person scenes.
Each session is interactive and hands-on. You’ll generate ideas, write sketches, and receive feedback in a safe, collaborative environment. By the end of the course, you’ll have multiple original sketches and a clear process you can use again and again.
Taught by Kevin Small (HBO’s Sketch Pad 2), who also worked closely with former SNL head writer T. Sean Shannon on a Comedy Central pilot and was in the Main Company of the Los Angeles sketch group ACME Comedy with innumerable comedy stars, such as Bryan Cranston, Mayim Bialik, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Joel McHale and Neil Flynn.
He also wrote and directed a sketch comedy pilot starring Harry Hamlin that was pitched to HBO.
This class provides a supportive, low-ego space for experienced writers to generate new material, sharpen structure, and push their comedic voice.
